World Heath Organization Raises Swine Flu Pandemic Alert Level

SAN FRANCISCO--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Cannabis Science, Inc. (OTCBB: GFON.OB) has extended its offer to provide its whole cannabis-extract lozenge to health and homeland security officials in Canada and Mexico. The Company’s offer follows the World Heath Organization raising its pandemic flu alert level to 5, the last step before declaration of a multi-continent pandemic. Earlier this week, following Sunday’s declaration of a public health emergency by U.S. Secretary of Homeland Security, Janet Napolitano, the Company offered to provide emergency cannabis formulations to the Department of Homeland Security for distribution.

The Company has supportive political contacts in both Mexico and Canada. Vice President and CFO Richard Cowan recently presented to the Legislative Prospects and Public Policy on Cannabis Conference sponsored by the Mexican Congreso de la Unión, and President and CEO Steven Kubby has close ties to numerous prominent Canadian politicians, following his five years in Canada seeking political refugee status. The Company expects to continue to expand its offers of its potential cannabis treatments internationally as outbreaks spreads overseas into Europe and Asia.

From The Associated Press:
WHO Director-General Margaret Chan declared the Phase 5 alert after consulting with flu experts from around the world. The decision could lead the global body to recommend additional measures to combat the outbreak, including asking vaccine manufacturers to switch production from seasonal flu vaccines to a pandemic vaccine. "All countries should immediately now activate their pandemic preparedness plans," Chan told reporters in Geneva. "It really is all of humanity that is under threat in a pandemic."

A Phase 5 alert means there is sustained transmission among people in at least two countries. Once the virus shows effective transmission in two different regions of the world, a full pandemic would be declared. WHO has confirmed human cases of swine flu in Mexico, the United States, Canada, Britain, Israel, New Zealand and Spain. Mexico and the United States have reported deaths.

About the H5N1 Bird Flu and H1N1 Swine Flu Strains
The H5N1 bird flu currently has 63% lethality. A swine-derived H1N1 strain was responsible for 20,000,000 influenza associated deaths in 1918 (more than killed by World War I). The current lethal outbreak of swine flu (H1N1) in Mexico has killed over 150 people and infected thousands, with over 2,000 now hospitalized. There are over 90 confirmed cases in the United States, with reports of infections in 11 states, and one U.S. fatality, a 23 month old child in Texas. Additional reports identify cases in nine countries. The H1N1 Swine Flu is a respiratory disease of pigs caused by type A flu viruses. Human cases are uncommon but can occur in people who are around pigs. An infected person, however, can transmit the disease to another person. Symptoms include a high fever, body aches, coughing, sore throat and severe respiratory congestion.
